About the Role
When someone in Indore types "python developer" and gets a sales job in Gurgaon, we've failed them. Search and matching is the heart of JobSpri, and we want a senior engineer to own it: how queries are understood, how results are ranked, and how a job seeker's profile turns into the "jobs picked for you" list they see every morning.
Today search runs on PostgreSQL with full-text ranking, skill aliases and city synonyms. It works, but it's reached the point where the next improvements need someone who can measure relevance properly and make careful changes without breaking what works.
What You'll Do
- Own search and recommendations end to end: query handling, ranking, filters and their performance
- Set up offline relevance checks so we know whether a change actually helped
- Decide, with data, when PostgreSQL stops being enough and what we'd move to
- Mentor two mid-level engineers through design reviews and pairing
- Work with product on what "a good match" means for freshers, career switchers and senior hires
What You'll Need
- 5+ years of backend engineering, with at least one search, ranking or recommendation system you can talk about in depth
- Strong PostgreSQL skills: indexing, query plans, full-text search
- You've shipped changes to ranking behind experiments and measured the result
- Comfortable writing Python every day
- Nice to have: Elasticsearch/OpenSearch or vector search in production
